Certain drive-level errors are not permanent hardware failures.
ONTAP will remove the drive from the RAID group.
In most cases, ONTAP disk maintenance center tests are then run on the drive to see if it is healthy enough to be reused in the system.

If tests pass, the drive is returned to the system as a spare drive. - If maintenance center is disabled on the system, it is still possible for the drive to be designated a spare drive and be reused, which is unexpected and undesirable.
